Surface mining

Surface mining began in the mid-16th century [2] and is practiced throughout the world, although the majority of surface coal mining occurs in North America. [3] It gained popularity throughout the 20th century, and surface mines now produce most of the coal mined in the United States. [4] In most forms of surface mining, heavy equipment, such as earthmovers, first remove the overburden.

Force-Fracture Characteristics of the Roof above Goaf in a ...

After coal is extracted from a working face in a steep coal seam (SCS), the immediate roof tends to cave in and refill the lower part of the goaf. Based on the geological conditions of a work area in a SCS and the characteristics of roof caving, this study proposed a formula for the width of the backfill in the goaf and analyzed the main factors influencing it.

Highwall mining system

Surface mining

Surface mining, including strip mining, open-pit mining and mountaintop removal mining, is a broad category of mining in which soil and rock overlying the mineral deposit (the overburden) are removed, in contrast to underground mining, in which the overlying rock is left in place, and the mineral is removed through shafts or tunnels.

The coal is mined by drilling and shooting the coal in stopes, with each stope level being approximately 18-20 meters apart (vertically). The coal is gravity or hand loaded onto conveyors imbedded in the floor, dropped into chutes and then into mine cars, and hauled out of the mine on the cars. There is currently only one haulage entry.
